An Autumn full of Arts, Culture and Community at Flowerfield Arts Centre
We are delighted to release our latest September - December 2024 Arts Guide, presenting a packed programme of creative opportunities and cultural experiences at Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart, From September to December 2024, explore an array of engaging live music events, enriching exhibitions, immersive workshops, and festive celebrations for all ages.
Live Performances
For music lovers, mark your calendars for Saturday 14th September when Flowerfield welcome home one of Portstewart’s own, Briana Corrigan. The voice behind The Beautiful South’s chart-topping hit "A Little Time." and described as one of the most distinctive voices in pop, this is sure to be a magical night of music. In October, Moving on Music present multi-award-winning trio Alfi (4 October) and in November singer-songwriter and founding member of ‘Show of Hands’ Steve Knightley brings his Winter Yards Tour to Flowerfield (1 November). After his sell-out show last year, Coleraine-born singer songwriter Anthony Toner makes a welcome return to Flowerfield with an intimate solo acoustic show on 13th December.
As the evenings grow darker, Flowerfield has just the thing to scratch your cinematic itch with a series of midweek matinees and classic evening film screenings to carry you all the way to Christmas. First up, on Wednesday 11th September. Bruce Robinson’s cult comedy Withnail and I for an evening screening and a matinee screening of The Philadelphia Storywith its stellar cast—Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and James Stewart.
Exhibitions That Ignite Thought
At Flowerfield Arts Centre the vibrant galleries become a canvas for powerful narratives and artistic expression. All Us Women, by Janey Moffatt opens on 7th September after a short residency where she will lead free community workshops and drop-in sessions, inviting women to contribute to her evolving exhibition. Janey’s work is a beautiful blend of fabric, paper, and stitch, enriched with her personal history and the poignant themes of violence, trauma, and healing.
A Space for Creativity and Connection
This Autumn, Flowerfield has a packed programme of opportunities to spark creativity and explore new passions.
Flowerfield offers a variety of courses, from pottery with Fiona Shannon, painting with Sarah Carrington and Elaine Harkness to T’ai Chi with Dr. Philip Johnson. If you’re not ready to commit to a course, one-off workshops in fused glass or tiffany glass, coastal paintingand more, will provide bite-sized creative experiences. Flowerfield are delighted to welcome celebrated poet and playwright Damian Gorman who will host a two-day writing course perfect for budding writers looking for a boost, which will include an evening reading of his own work.
Children can explore their artistic side through the season with Linda at Weekend Wonders where they will get the chance to make the likes of Halloween Lanterns, Shabby Chic Pumpkins and Christmas Stockings. A special highlight is our Grandparents’ Day Celebration at Flowerfield where Grandparents and grandchildren can attend a workshop together to bond and create lasting family memories. There will also be fused glass workshops and pottery for our young artists.
We are excited for the return of Mums Meet and Make our creative series designed for new mothers with infants under one-year-old. These workshops provide an opportunity to combat isolation, foster community, and spark creativity. These workshops allow mothers to enjoy guilt-free "me time” with pottery, painting and creative writing at an affordable cost.
Halloween and Christmas Magic
Mark your Calendars for the much-anticipated Halloween Open Day on Thursday 31st October at Flowerfield. This year, the Open Day will celebrate our shared cultural heritage and embrace the light as the darker evenings draw in – as communities have done for centuries across different cultures. Dive into the magic with a family-friendly movie, hands-on creative craft sessions celebrating Samhain and Diwali, storytelling and more, but beware of who lurks around the corners… These activities have received financial support from the Executive Office through the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Good Relations Programme.
As the festive chill fills the air, mark your calendars for the best Festive market on the North Coast. Our Christmas Craft Market (9 November – 21 December), will provide gorgeous gift options for all your loved ones this season with beautiful bespoke pieces created by artisans from across the Borough and beyond, PLUS there will be a series of Christmas-themed creative workshops and festive film screenings, for all ages.
