In session one, explore Castlerock beach through sketching, using mixed media and mark-making to capture its sights and sounds. The next three sessions at Flowerfield focus on studio landscape painting, transforming sketches, photos, and gathered materials into larger, finished mixed-media artworks inspired by the beach workshop.

Week 1 - OUTDOOR - Meet at Castlerock beach, at the picnic benches beside the public toilets on the promenade.

Outdoor: Using mixed media (watercolour, pen, chalk, coloured pencil) and mark-making we will embark on an outdoor sketching tour of Castlerock beach, responding directly to the beautiful surroundings in our sketchbooks and gathering visual information, while experiencing the sights and sounds of the beach.

Please come dressed appropriately for the outdoor workshop, whatever the weather. If you have a portable fold-away chair, you may wish to bring it.

Weeks 2,3,4 - In the Studio at Flowerfield Arts Centre

Indoor:

A series of 3 indoor landscape painting workshops at Flowerfield Arts Centre, following the site visit to Castlerock Beach, using the sketches, photos and gathered information collected from the beach workshop to create larger and more finished paintings in mixed media.

M A T E R I A L S

For the outdoor workshop:

Please bring a sketchbook/a dozen sheets of paper, acrylics/watercolours (ideally a travel box), pens, chalks, pencils, favourite brushes - whatever you like to paint with. Drawing boards and extra brushes will be provided. Masking tape, kitchen roll and water pots will also be available. Please wear clothing and footwear suitable for beach walking and painting, whatever the weather. Meet at the picnic benches beside the public toilets, at the promenade.

For the indoor workshops:

Please bring your sketchbook/artwork created at the beach visit,

along with a sketchbook/some paper approximately A3 size, 250gsm paper

A set of acrylic paints and a selection of brushes,

Canvas boards or canvases of various sizes; no larger than A3, four in total,

(these can be bought from The Works, Amazon, or The Range)

Desktop easels are provided for the indoor workshops.
