Local Ceramic Artist Fiona Shannon will support you to design, make and decorate your own funky Flowerpot Head using air-dry clay. Designed for beginners, this class will be a fun creative environment to get crafty using a range of clay hand building techniques. This workshop is not only fun but improves children’s creative skills, self-expression, confidence and dexterity. You will be able to take your clay Flowerpot home to paint and varnish after the workshop, so please bring a box with you to carry it home in.

Learn to make your very own simple chain bracelet with Emma Thorpe of Atlantic Rose. Using simple wire working techniques, Emma will expertly guide you through the process of turning simple sterling silver wire into a pretty bracelet for you to wear or give away as a gift.

FAMILY FUSING: GLASS BIRDHOUSE & BABYBIRD FOR PARENTS & KIDS AGED 6YRS+

Parents and kids can get creative this mid-term making very special hanging pieces together. Design your own glass bird house and baby bird. You will assemble various types of opalescent and transparent coloured glass onto your baby bird and bird house. You will also cut and grind glass which will be demonstrated and taught during the workshop; and make a hanging loop for each. No experience necessary.

Participants must wear close-toed shoes.


IT’S ALL IN THE MIND! HOW YOUR THINKING AFFECTS YOUR LIFE

Dr Maria Kee is a former consultant Psychiatrist and Cognitive Behaviour Therapist who left the NHS after over 20 years, to focus on studying and delivering training in the field of positive psychology. During lockdown Maria delved into the world of neuroscience to discover good news on how we can develop new neural connections at any age and use our mind to change our brain. This one-day session will be very interactive and fun. Maria will share techniques from cognitive behaviour therapy along with insights from the world of positive psychology and neuroscience to help you understand yourself better and inspire you to live more fully. Maria also taught aerobics and Lindy Hop dancing. You have been warned! Please arrive before 9.45am to begin at 10am sharp. There will be time for a lunch break, so please bring a packed lunch.

INTRODUCTION TO GLAZE CHEMISTRY

Join Potter Fiona Shannon as she explores the world of glaze chemistry in this one-off masterclass at Flowerfield Arts Centre Portstewart. Why do metal oxides and stains react different with the same glaze? How do changes in firing temperatures and atmospheres in the kiln effect the glazes? In this masterclass we will answer these questions as well as combine various materials to mix up a glaze together from scratch and play with oxides and other colorants to explore how they will react to glaze. You will complete a number of small test tiles which will be fired to be collected at a later date.

This masterclass will benefit art teachers, art students and amateur potters. Please bring apron and wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little messy.

Lead by Potter Artist Fiona Shannon, this five-week beginners’ throwing course will teach you the basics of throwing on the pottery wheel including centring, opening out and pulling up which you will be able to use to create a variety of different pots, including mugs and bowls. You will also learn turning techniques to finish your pots off and techniques to add finer details such as handles and feet. In the last week we will spend the evening adding colour to your pots using a variety of slips. Each participant can use up to two bags of stoneware clay which they can use to make items that will be fired and glazed by the tutor to be collected at a later date.

COASTAL LANDSCAPES: RUNKERRY BEACH, PORTBALLINTRAE

Saturday 4 March

10.30am-1pm

Cost: £25 full / £23 concession per day

A drawing trip to Runkerry Beach, Portballintrae (weather permitting) will provide the setting to work directly from nature with a focus on how to suggest mood and a sense of place rather than a perfect drawing. You will explore various mixed mediums in monotone and colour, to produce sketches which can be developed in this series of workshops. You will become more confident using your sketchbook (A4, A5 or A3 on at least 140gms paper) as a personal visual diary using different drawing techniques and exercises. Please bring all your studies made outside to use in the other two workshops in the studio. If weather does not permit the beach trip, you will work from views at Flowerfield, using the same techniques.

Please bring drawing and painting materials that are easily carried. You will be walking and sitting to sketch outdoors so outdoor clothes and footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are required.

DAISYCHAIN BRACELET FOR AGES 14YRS+

Saturday 4 March, 11am - 2pm

Start learning bead weaving with Emma Thorpe of Atlantic Rose and create a cute daisy bracelet. Using colourful seedbeads, you will learn the basics of off-loom bead-weaving with a simple daisy chain stitch before strengthening your daisy chain and completing it with a beaded toggle and loop. No previous experience required.

Good fine motor skills are required to work with using small seed beads and fine needles.


SPRING HARE SCULPTING FOR AGES 8-14YRS - SOLD OUT

Ceramic Artist Fiona Shannon will guide you to design and sculpt a Spring Hare or animal of your choice. Designed for beginners and improvers this class will be a fun creative environment to get crafty using a range of clay techniques. In this workshop we will be using air dry clay which means you can take it home, paint it and let it dry naturally! Please bring a box with you to take your animal home.

Create two rectangular panels (sized 10x15cm) based and inspired by floral designs. After fusing the panels will be glued to a glass candle holder. This will allow each participant to enjoy their fused glass piece both in daylight and illuminated in the dark evening times with a nightlight.

Learn how to use the easy and accessible process of mono-printing to explore the landscape and create a series of prints using different techniques without the need for a printing press. Instead of working directly from nature bring along a drawing or use a sketchbook study made in the drawing trip or printed image/photograph of a landscape personal to you. You will use memory and imagination to develop further studies. Explore using a limited colour palette and painting a personal colour chart and the work of other artists use a gestural expressive style.

Create a spring painting inspired by Gustav Klimt’s Flower Garden paintings. The painting is a prime example of Klimt's transition into the floral impressionist technique. The painting illustrates an array of colourful flowers, uprising positive emotions within the piece. You will explore colour mixing and oil painting techniques to create a painting on wood panel.

COASTAL LANDSCAPES: COLOUR COLLAGE

Saturday 18 March,10.30am-1pm

Cost: £25 full / £23 concession per day

Use the process of collage combined with mark making to explore the landscape and ‘draw with scissors.’ You will make colour the focus, try colour-mixing exercises to find your palette and paint up papers to use in collage, playing with different textures and combinations to create movement and a sense of low relief and explore other artists who use collage in a painterly way. For source material bring along some organic found objects that interest you from a favourite walk in the landscape, (e.g., leaves, feathers, shells, twigs). You will need a sketchbook to make more studies and a good bundle of loose A4 cartridge paper for making painted papers for collage. Bring some acrylic paint (your choice of colours but primaries red, blue and yellow and white and black for mixing is a good start, some different size brushes. Pencils, charcoal , crayons and coloured pencils and other drawing materials you enjoy. Scissors and a Pritt stick for collage.

Lead by Potter Artist Fiona Shannon, this workshop designed for beginners, will teach you how to create a range of hand-built ceramics using a stoneware clay. You will learn how to hand roll, form and decorate a range of pots suitable for a bright Spring table. Fiona will demonstrate how to create stunning simple ceramic mini dishes, centrepiece plates and small cake stands, perfect to enjoy some home baked with tea on a Spring evening. Participants can choose to create one of their own unique ceramic centrepieces (plate/cake stand or cheese board) as well as a couple of mini pots which will then be fired and glazed for you, to be collected at a later date.
